Freshman Year in Review

It's finally here. I can officially say that I have completed my first year of high school. I'm a sophomore. That's crazy. This year has by far been the fastest school year to date and I cannot believe it's over. Looking back, I've learned so much since August. About myself, about who my friends are, about being a student, about being a person. This has been a monumental school year for me and I look forward to seeing what next year brings, but for now I'll stick to looking back on what the 2013-14 school year was like for me.

I was nothing like the girl I am today at the beginning of the year. I didn't know who I was, what my style was, what my high school experience would even entail. But I learned quickly that it was nothing like I thought it would be, and that's a good thing. I was welcomed into my school with open arms, making friends with other freshman and upperclassmen. There was such a great community that I couldn't wait to be a part of.

My first semester was a bit of a revelation. School had always been easy for me, and this year brought an unpleasant surprise. I was taking classes only seniors take and was probably way in over my head. But I kept going. I pushed through the hard classes and got all my missings turned in until I was at the point where I wanted to be.

So much happened that first semester. I went to homecoming, got my braces off (let's not talk about it), went home to New York, and I learned what it truly meant to work hard for a grade. I learned more about myself than I ever had.

And then second semester came, and so much happened. I traveled to Cherry Valley, OH for a title competition for dance. One of my best friends was crowned, but I ended up winning the Interview Award. It was insane, and I realized I had found something that was really one of my strengths: talking and expressing my feelings on different subjects. That award was one of the things that inspired me to start BHMM.

Another big second semester event: I moved out of the house I had lived in for the last 9 years and into a new house in a new neighborhood. I told myself this would be a new start for me, and I was right. I was more focused, more organized, and I started to care more about myself. Not two days before the move, I put up my first post here on BHMM and never looked back.

The Lilly Jeep, more dance competitions, participating in musicals and more, so much happened second semester. School got tough, and I will admit that I slacked, but I got it all together. I made so many friends this year, new people who I had never really talked to but learned how similar we were. I actively participated in all arts events, ran (and won) for VP of my class, and did all kinds of things outside of school that brought me closer to my peers.

Shoutout to both my parents for the immense support this year. They pushed me through all the rough patches and helped me every step of the way. I don't know where I'd be without the almost-daily Infinite Campus screenshots from mom and the little I-know-I'm-not-home-but-I'm-proud-of-you texts from my dad. It's those moments that changed our group iMessage (don't judge) from a constant "Courtney get your grades together" to "I just slayed that test and got a 95%."

And now, as I sit here writing this, it is finals week and tech week for my dance recital. All my assignments are turned in, all my finals are done. I've got one year under my belt, three more to go. And I can't wait to share the ride with you.

First day to last day...

Oh and PS? Last day of school outfit: Forever 21 Mint High-Low Skirt, Old Navy White Tank, and my Jacks.
